Joint Coach Trip to the

Blists Hill Victorian Town, Ironbridge

Following last year’s very successful visit to the Black Country Museum, we join up with the Cherry Hinton Local History Society for a trip to the Blists Hill Victorian Town at Iron Bridge.  www.ironbridge.org.uk/

It was once described as "the most extraordinary district in the world"; the Ironbridge Gorge is still a remarkable, and beautiful, place to visit today.  A huge amount of early industry survives as furnaces, factories, workshops, canals and the settlements of Coalbrookdale, Ironbridge, Jackfield, and Coalport.  It is the Birthplace of the Industrial Revolution and contains ten award-winning Museums spread along the valley beside the wild River Severn - still spanned by the world's first Iron Bridge.

As it is a bit further away than we would normally go, it will require an early start, as we will need to have a comfort break on the Journey.

Joint Guided Tour of Duxford Airfield

Guided Tour with Les Millgate

Earlier in the year Les Millgate gave us a fascinating talk on the history of Duxford airfield from its creation until the late 1950s to both the CALH and Linton & District Historical Society.  Les himself was one of the early Jet pilots.  Les is now days one of Duxford’s regular specialist guides and it looks like being a very special day.  We will travel there in our own cars and meet outside the main entrance.  http://duxford.iwm.org.uk/

The aerodrome at Duxford was built during the First World War and was one of the earliest Royal Air Force stations.  During 1917 the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) expanded and Duxford was one of a number of new stations established to train RFC aircrew.  On 1 April 1918 the Royal Naval Air Service and the Royal Flying Corps were merged to become the Royal Air Force, the world's first fully independent air force.  In September 1918 Duxford opened as a flying school - No. 35 Training Depot Station.

Saturday 22nd August:

Joint Coach Trip To Norwich Cathedral

Guided Tour with Revd. Dr. Lynne Broughton

Following last year’s very successful visit to Lincoln Cathedral.  This is a joint excursion with the Cambridgeshire Historic Churches Trust (CHCT) to celebrate the 900th Anniversary year of the Foundation of Ely.

We will be guided by the Revd.  Dr. Lynne Broughton who is one of our specialist guides during our summer tours of Cambridgeshire churches.  Lynne is also a renowned authority and expert on the history and imagery of our great Cathedral’s and is the author of several excellent books on the subject.

Norwich Cathedral is packed with history & imagery and for over 900 years the awesome beauty of this Norman building has reached out and touched people, speaking to them of God’s glory and his love for each one of them.  The Cathedral’s architecture is justly famous, its history fascinating and its collection of art and objects outstanding.  The Cathedral deserves its five star rating as a tourist attraction, but this is no museum.

Norwich Cathedral houses many treasures.  We are rich in beautiful objects created to glorify God by those skilled in many different arts and crafts.  These treasures vary from the fine workmanship and creativity of stone and wooden carvings to stained glass to paintings in our side chapels to gold and silverware in our Treasury.  Some highlights include the following: Roof Bosses, Misericords, Panel paintings, Wall Paintings, Church Plate, Seven Sacraments Font, Victorian Stained Glass, and a Pelican Lectern.  www.cathedral.org.uk  or why not come along and visit many of Norwich’s other great attractions.

Meet:

Trumpington Park & ride at 8.40am and head for Ely where we will pickup from the Barton Road car-park at around 9.10am.  The executive coach has an onboard toilet and we hope to arrive at Norwich Cathedral by 11am.  Lynne will provide a guided tour as part of the trip.  We will leave Norwich around 5.00pm arriving back in Ely approx 6.30pm and Cambridge approx 7.00pm

Cost:

£20.00      CALH & CHCT Members

£22.50      other Affiliated & CCAN groups

£25.00      Non-Members

Bookings by Friday 21st August First Come First Served - Please Book Early Numbers Restricted to 47

Barton Road Carpark, Ely

Due to the new parking restrictions, to be able to park safely all day, please park no earlier than 0831.  We have adapted our departure times to deal with this issue.  If you have booked from here we will not go without you

Please note: as the price of Diesel Fuel has gone up so dramatically, it has vastly increased the cost of hiring coaches.  The best way to cater for this is for as many of you as can to come on the visits and fill every seat on the coach.  However, if the numbers mean that the trips are unviable, it will be cancelled and people that have booked will receive a full refund.  Friends and family are more than welcome.
